The Town of Methana

Built on a peninsula of the Peloponnese, it is one of the oldest resorts in the Saronic Gulf. Here there are hot springs along the SE beach of the peninsula – and beautiful beaches with clear sea.

From antiquity they were famous for their thermal springs, which are due to volcanic phenomena. Pausanias’ reference to the “Troiziniaka”, to the eruption of the volcano and the appearance of hot springs with healing properties, at the beginning of the 3rd c.e. Archaeological finds prove that the area has been inhabited since prehistoric times. In ancient times, the peninsula belonged to the region of Trizinia, which was captured by the Athenians in 425 BC. Their name is due to methane, which is associated with thermal waters and volcanic activity in the area. You can go to Methana by boat from Piraeus or by road via the Athens – Corinth National Road and Epidaurus.
